The start of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a deep need for community connection as well as healthy food. We felt moved to do something to benefit the community, and The Garden For All was born. We began with three 25-foot rows and two small raised beds. In the 2020 growing season, The Garden produced 750 lbs. of vegetables, all of which we gave away. In 2021, we expanded to 9x50 feet, grew a wider variety of produce, and launched the flower ministry. Over the next two years, we gave away over 20,000 servings of fresh produce and 750 vases of fresh flowers.
Encouraged by our success, and motivated by the increasing need in our community, in 2023 we are tripling our growing space. Generous donors and corporate partners have made this expansion possible. We also will extend our growing season through the use of greenhouse tunnels, allowing us to provide more support to local pantries. Our Sow-and-Grow container garden assembly event expanded to include a third pantry and up to 80 participants. In September 2023, we officially crossed the 5000-lb milestone for the year, and the total donated in 2023 surpassed the three prior years combined.
In addition to growing produce and fresh flowers, we have converted three sections of grass to pollinator meadow. Bees, butterflies and birds find their homes there, making The Garden For All a place that gives life to all creatures.
We welcome ALL people into the community in our outdoor space to provide opportunities to grow in relationship with one another and creation. We grow and harvest fresh produce and flowers for patrons of Healthy New Albany, Gahanna Residents in Need, Broad Street Food Pantry, Motherful, and other local organizations.
We believe that connection to and caring for creation is a key part of our call as Christians. We believe that our environmental crisis is a spiritual sickness and that connecting to the earth is healing. We believe we are meant to be in a relationship with one another, in creation. And, we believe all people deserve healthy produce and beautiful flowers to nourish and sustain them.
Above all, The Garden for All is truly for all. It is for the people who receive the food and the flowers at the pantries and for the people who come together to invest in the community through service. We do this work for other people to nourish their bodies and spirits. We do this work for our community.
